Maia wasn’t sure if she was shaking with anticipation at walking into danger or because she’d left her mates behind. It was too soon after she’d been reunited with Kheir, and all she wanted after being worked up with worry over Jaro all day was to stay home. But Dita needed her.

“Remember, Az goes in first to break the enchantments,” Zamanya repeated for the fifth time, her face made even more severe by her braids tied back tight. “Don’t go rushing in, Maia, we need you in the middle so we can keep you surrounded—you’re our secret weapon, and our best chance of subduing the captors.”

“I know,” Maia replied, feeling itchy inside her skin, needing to act, to move, instead of just crouching here behind a hedge opposite the tall terrace house Dita was being held in. But she wasn’t stupid; she knew they needed the best window of opportunity or they could blow this whole rescue. She also knew she was working with a team who did this regularly, and successfully, and their chances of pulling this off were pretty high—as long as she didn’t fuck up.

“Ev, you might need to heal some of the victims before we can move them,” Azrail murmured, his blue eyes fixed on the windows of the house across the road, and his dark hair curling around his tattooed shoulders, brushing the heavy canvas jacket Maia supposed he wore in the guise of armour. Given what he could do with his earth magic—and that other, mist kind—he probably didn’t need more protection. “Zamanya, anything you can do to stop the neighbours seeing as we get them out of here and across the street to the wagon, do it.”

Zamanya nodded, her face transformed into hard determination, stone cold and unmovable. She and Az were completely different tonight, almost new people. Even Ev wasn’t as grumbly as usual, instead watchful and quietly supportive. Maia wondered if the same burden that weighed on her soul affected them.

“They’re moving,” Maia breathed, noticing movement across the street. Her stomach tightened, her muscles tensed and ready, her tongue already tingling with a song. They needed all the lords, diplomats, and fuck knows who else was involved to be in one room; it’d make their chances of success far higher. And it appeared they were congregating.

“Drinks in the den by the looks of things,” Evrille said, her dark brows slashed low over her eyes, such fire in her sapphire stare. And hatred—pure, unbridled hatred. She’d never truly hated Maia, only feared her; that was abundantly clear.

Azrail nodded, his shoulders tense and his tanned hands twitching, calling up magic from the earth. “Let’s go. Ev, around the back, stab anyone who comes at you.”

Evrille didn’t scoff or roll her eyes; she just nodded. “I know the plan, Az.” Her words were both serious and reassuring. Maia tried not to think of how hard it must be for Azrail to send his sister into a dangerous house like this. She had no siblings
